Across Blidinje Nature Park

Route: Grabovica – Žlijeb – Čvrsnica – Hajdučka vrata – Crvenjak Lake – Veliki Vilinac – Blidinje Lake

If there is one symbol that represents the wild beauty of Blidinje National Park, it is the Hajdučka Vrata (Outlaw’s Door). This natural stone arch stands at over 2,000 meters, overlooking the Diva Grabovica canyon. It is a place of history, legends, and incredible views.

The 3-Day Traverse

After learning our lessons in previous attempts, this time, we had a plan, proper navigation, and 3 days to soak it all in. We wanted to cross the entire Blidinje Nature Park, from Grabovica to the Blidinje Lake.

Grabovica to Blidinje Lake

Distance: 23.02km Time: ca. 14:30 h

Elevation gain: 2113m

Day 1: The Ascent to Žlijeb

We started again in Grabovica, but the pace was different. We hiked up through the ancient forests to the cabin at Žlijeb. It’s a steep climb, but breaking it up made it enjoyable. We spent the first night there, enjoying the silence of the forest. The cabin is open to everyone and was rebuilt by locals on top of a foundation from the early 20th century. You have everything you need there and more, and we packed for a nice BBQ. The cabin has indoor and outdoor fireplaces and all the utensils you may need. From there, you have a trail to the most amazing lookout, it’s my absolute favourite spot so far.

Day 2: Reaching the Arch

Fresh and rested, we pushed for the summit. The hike from Žlijeb to the plateau is stunning. We passed the Tise viewpoint (one of the best views in the Balkans) and made our way back to Hajdučka Vrata. This time, we arrived with plenty of daylight to enjoy the sunset. We camped at the glacial pond again—it felt like meeting an old friend.

Day 3: Across the Plateau to Blidinje Lake

The final leg was the longest but the most scenic. We hiked across the open plateau of Čvrsnica, descending all the way down to Blidinje Lake. Ending the trip at the lake, looking back up at the mountains we just crossed, was the perfect finish.

My Tips for Hikers

Carry Extra Water after the second spring: There are few springs on the upper plateau. Bring more than you think you need.

Respect the Terrain: The Dinaric Alps are rugged. Paths can be overgrown or rocky.

Download Offline Maps: Don’t rely on cell service. Use an app like Komoot and have backup aswell (i now use a garmin forerunner 255 smartwatch that has its own GPS).

Other useful resources: guided tours / Komoot (GPX etc)
