Kozara National Park

Dreaming of the “Green Beauty”: A Pre-Trip Guide to Kozara National Park

Moving from Germany to Bosnia and Herzegovina for love was the best decision of my life, largely because it gave me a front-row seat to the most incredible landscapes in Europe. But even after years of hauling my camera gear across the Dinaric Alps, there are still untamed corners of this country waiting to be discovered. Next year, my compass is pointing firmly to the northwest. It is finally time to explore the legendary Kozara National Park.

Because I haven’t set foot on these trails yet, I don’t have my usual first-hand GPX files and drone footage to share with you. Instead, I’ve been deep in research mode, scouring the web and the park’s official documentation to build this little overview.

Think of this page as our community pre-trip guide. Once I get out there and experience it myself, I will update this page with my own photos, practical logistics, and step-by-step trail reports. Until then, here is everything we know about the dense, historic forests of Kozara.

General Overview & Geography

Located in the northwestern part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kozara was proclaimed a National Park back in 1967. It covers an area of roughly 39 square kilometers (3,907 hectares).

Unlike the towering, jagged limestone peaks of Čvrsnica or Maglić, Kozara is a low, “island” mountain situated at the edge of the Pannonian plain. It is beautifully framed by four major rivers: the Sava, Una, Vrbas, and Sana. Because of its lower elevation and incredibly dense forest cover, it has rightfully earned the nickname “The Green Beauty of Krajina” (Zelena Ljepotica).

The beating heart of the park is Mrakovica, a central plateau sitting at 806 meters above sea level, which serves as the main hub for visitors, events, and trailheads.

Top Planned Trails & Activities (The Core)

Because Kozara doesn’t have extreme, high-alpine altitudes, it is highly regarded as a paradise for mountain biking, trail running, and relaxed hiking. Here is what is on my radar for next year’s trip:

  • Summiting Lisina Peak: At 978 meters, Lisina is the highest point in the park. My plan is to hike up to the summit for what is supposed to be a spectacular panoramic view over the Krajina region.
  • The Zečiji Kamen Via Ferrata: For a bit of adrenaline, Kozara features an adventure park and an established via ferrata climbing route at Zečiji Kamen (Rabbit’s Rock). The route reportedly takes you right past an attractive 15-meter waterfall, making it a must-film location for the YouTube channel.
  • Mountain Biking the Network: The park boasts an incredible 300 kilometers of marked hiking and cycling trails. The cycling routes are color-coded (red, green, blue, yellow) for different difficulty levels. I definitely plan to rent a bike or bring my own to cover more ground through the deep woods.

Practical Tip: As soon as I complete these routes, I will upload the verified, downloadable GPX tracks to my Komoot profile and link them directly below.

Flora & Fauna: A Pristine Forest Ecosystem

If you love the feeling of walking under a thick, unbroken canopy, Kozara is the place to be. A staggering 88% of the park is covered in dense forest, dominated by towering beech and fir trees.

This lush environment supports immense biodiversity, with over 865 plant species identified within the park boundaries. The abundance of clean, drinkable water springs (like the famous Bijele vode) makes it a perfect habitat for wildlife. When I visit, I will be keeping a close eye out for the park’s resident roe deer, wild boars, foxes, and wild hares, as well as the diverse birdlife that calls the Krajina woods home.

History & Cultural Heritage: The Monument to the Revolution

You simply cannot talk about Kozara without talking about its profound historical significance. During World War II, the mountain was an epicenter of resistance and unimaginable suffering during the Axis Kozara Offensive of 1942.

At the central Mrakovica plateau, you will find the awe-inspiring Monument to the Revolution (Spomenik Revoluciji). Built in 1972 by the famous sculptor Dušan Džamonja, this 33-meter-high brutalist masterpiece is a symbol of the park. Its cylindrical shape features alternating hollows and bulges of concrete and steel, representing the fierce struggle between life and death, victory and oppression.

The memorial complex also includes a museum and a memorial wall bearing the names of 9,921 fallen partisan fighters. It is a powerful, solemn place that serves as a reminder of the resilience of the local people.

Logistics: Where to Stay & Eat

Based on my research, the park is very accessible and has great infrastructure for extended stays, whether you are looking for a rugged night in the woods or a comfortable hotel bed.

  • Mountain Lodges & Bungalows: For a rustic experience, you can rent the traditional Bungalovi NP Kozara nestled right under the coniferous trees on Mrakovica. There is also the Kotlovača Mountaineering Lodge, the oldest and largest in the park.
  • Hotels: If you want modern comforts after a long day of hiking, Hotel Bijele Vode on Mrakovica seems to be the premier choice, offering great local food and warm beds.
  • Getting There: The park is incredibly well-connected, located just 24 km from Prijedor and about 56 km from Banja Luka, making it an easy drive.
  • Official Info: For the most accurate, up-to-date information on entrance fees and park regulations, be sure to visit the official website at npkozara.com.
