My First Solo Overnight: Ruins, Rain, and the White Canyon of Mostar

*Warning – Trail might not be accessible due to current landslides*

In September 2023, I decided it was time for a personal milestone: my first solo overnight hike. The trail itself is also perfectly suitable for a Day Hike, but I wanted to test my new tent, and I was already a bit familiar with the area.

I didn’t want to go too far from home, but I wanted somewhere wild. I chose the canyon of Mostarska Bijela. Located just north of Mostar, this valley is a hidden gem of Herzegovina. It is famous for its sparkling white limestone riverbed and a “semi-underground” river that disappears into a cave.

But as I learned, even a “local” hike can turn into a serious adventure when the weather turns against you.

Into the Valley of History

The hike starts gently. You leave the main road and enter a world that feels completely cut off from modern life. The trail winds through a forest that is slowly reclaiming the past.

The Lojpur Ruins

About an hour into the hike, you pass something that always gives me pause. Hidden in the trees are the stone remains of houses and an old family graveyard. Historical Fact: These ruins belonged to the Lojpur family, who lived in this isolated valley roughly between 1890 and 1930. Seeing the hand-carved crosses on the graves in the middle of the silent forest is a powerful reminder of how hard life used to be in these mountains.

The Camp & The Storm

My plan was to hike to the end of the valley, near the famous cave entrance, and set up camp. The day started beautifully—sunshine, blue skies, and that unique, blindingly white stone that gives the river its name (Bijela means White).

But in the mountains, things change fast.

By late afternoon, the air grew heavy. Dark clouds began to roll over the peaks of Prenj. I realized I was in for a wet night. I scrambled to find a flat spot and pitched my tent just as the first drops fell.

The Solo Experience: There is a specific feeling you get when you are alone in a tent, miles from the nearest person, while a heavy storm hammers the fabric inches from your face. It rained heavily all night. I didn’t get much sleep, wondering if my gear would hold up (spoiler: it did!).

The Race Against the Clouds

I woke up to a miracle: Silence.

I unzipped the tent to find the sun breaking through. The wet limestone was glistening, and the air was incredibly fresh. But looking up at the peaks, I saw the next wave of clouds already forming.

I packed up camp in record time. The hike back was a race. I moved fast, trying to outwalk the approaching grey wall. I managed to stay one step ahead of the rain, reaching the car just as the weather turned again.

It was a wet, sleepless, and slightly stressful trip—and I absolutely loved it.

No Link to Komoot this time, will update when i know if the trail is cleared and accessible again.

Trip Summary

  • Location: Mostarska Bijela (Salakovac, north of Mostar).
  • Difficulty: Moderate (but watch out for flash floods in the canyon during rain!).
  • Gear Check: A good waterproof tent is mandatory here. The valley catches rain quickly.
